IPMAT Exam Dates Eligibility Syllabus and Preparation
If you are in the final year of Class 12 and have your eye on a direct admission to various IIM institutes without having to take CAT after graduation, then you have IPMAT 2027 in front of you. Just one of the most talked about entrance tests in India today as it has a few seats, a dual degree and a direct access to a IIM brand name, making it worth every minute spent on preparation. This guide will explain to you what IPMAT really is, who conducts it, when it is expected to occur, its structure, and the smart way to prepare.
What Is IPMAT?
IPMAT is the Integrated Programme in Management Aptitude Test. A national level, computer-based test, it offers students a direct entrance to the five-year integrated management course after the 12th and saves them from the traditional path of completing a bachelor's course and then taking CAT. There are two separate versions of this exam conducted by two separate IIMs:
• IPMAT Indore– conducted by IIM Indore
• IPMAT Rohtak– conducted by IIM Rohtak
They both lead to the Integrated Programme in Management, a 5-year program that consists of an undergraduate program and an MBA. For example, the Bachelor of Arts in “Foundations of Management” is awarded along with the MBA at the end of the programme at IIM Indore. Some other management institutes also accept scores, meaning having one score can mean having more than one career door open.
There is also a related exam which is conducted by the National Testing Agency known as JIPMAT which is the entry mode to the IIM Bodh Gaya and IIM Jammu. Students can get admission to other IIMs like Ranchi, Shillong, and Amritsar as well with IPMAT or JIPMAT score. In short, this is one exam or its twin can give you entry to several IIM campuses simultaneously.

IPMAT 2027: Expected Exam Dates
There is no official announcement from IIM Indore regarding the 2027 admission so the information provided below is a reference based on the previous year's pattern, and is not a prediction.
Based on the trend of the last few years, the official notification is likely to be released between August and October 2026 and the exam dates are likely to be confirmed around January 2027. The registration window is typically February to March 2027, and the actual exam is usually the first week of May at the most, with IIM Rohtak holding the exam about a week later. The results are usually announced in June and then the shortlisted candidates undergo an interview and group discussion for the 2027–32 batch.
These are all estimates and the best thing you can do is start keeping an eye on the official portals, iimidr.ac.in for Indore and the IIM Rohtak website for Rohtak from about December or January onwards.
Who Can Apply: Eligibility Criteria
The eligibility criteria for IPMAT are relatively straightforward, though there are a few requirements to keep in mind.
1. Academic Qualification: 12th pass (or appearing) from recognised board. This exam is stream neutral, meaning you don't have to come from a science, commerce or arts stream.
2. Minimum Marks: The minimum percentage criteria for the basic eligibility requirement for IIM Indore does not have any hard and fast rule, but a good academic performance is beneficial during the shortlisting process. For the general category candidates, the average score of 55-60% in both 10th and 12th is considered to be as per the norms of the other IIMs and JIPMAT.
3. Age Limit: The age is usually around 20 years and below on a fixed date (usually July 31 of the admissions year) and up to 5 years age relaxation is given to SC/ST/PwD candidates.
4. 10th marks: While applying for IIM, a few even consider your class 10 marks; so make sure to have those marksheets ready.
Since the eligibility may vary from institute to institute, make sure you check the exact eligibility notification of the institute you wish to apply for before you apply in Indore, Rohtak or JIPMAT.
Exam Pattern – What to Expect:
This is when you need to get ready smartly, as the IPMAT question is not about answering all the questions by making random guesses with Multiple Choice Questions.
The paper is split into three parts, each of which has a set time limit of 40 minutes and, crucially, the time spent in each part cannot be carried over to the other parts. This one rule alters the training approach that should be taken: sectional speed is as important as overall accuracy. The exam usually has a total of about 90 questions totalling 360 marks, although this can vary from 90 to 100, in different years, depending on the subject, and it contains both multiple-choice questions and short-answer questions where you can't choose from the options.
IPMAT Rohtak consists of three sections and is fully computer based and runs for 120 minutes.
Typically, the following three areas are tested:
1. Quantitative Ability – assesses your understanding of fundamental mathematical concepts, proficiency in numerical computation and logical reasoning. This section of the test relies heavily on strong fundamentals, because the questions in this section are worth more for being answered quickly than correctly.
2. Verbal Ability– covers reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary, and language-based logical reasoning. Often it has been the most difficult section to score well in, and the sectional cutoff has seen many candidates miss out on being selected due to poor performance on this section, even though they performed well on the other sections.
3. Logical Reasoning– checks pattern recognition skills, puzzle-solving and analytical skills within a time-limit. Candidates are advanced only if they make all three sectionals — and quite often, a lot of great students will fall by the wayside just because one section of their profile was not up to scratch.
It is worth to note that IPMAT Rohtak is slightly less difficult to solve than Indore with the papers mainly requiring simple logic and straightforward mathematical formulas mostly from classes 6 through 10th, while the papers in Indore are a bit more of a challenge and require more speed and some academic concepts that are a bit more advanced.
IPMAT Syllabus 2027
Important first thing to note is that IIM Indore has not issued a single detailed official syllabus document. The topics have remained relatively stable from year to year, and much of what is out there has been put together by coaching institutes over the years based on the analysis of the exam papers.
Generally, it's possible to anticipate:
• Quant: Number systems, percentages, ratios, profit and loss, time-speed-distance, algebra, geometry, mensuration, probability and basic data interpretation.
• Verbal: Reading comprehension passages, para jumbles, sentence correction, vocabulary-based questions, synonyms/antonyms, idioms.
• Logical Reasoning: Puzzles, seating arrangement, blood relation, coding decoding, syllogism, data sufficiency.
It is relatively easy for those who have recently completed their board exams to get through the most quant-heavy parts of JIPMAT, as most of the material is based on class 10 level maths.
Seat Competition: Know the Numbers
When walking in, it is best to have realistic expectations. This is among the most competitive management entrance tests for Class 12 students in India, with over 40,000 candidates vying for approximately 150 spots at IIM Indore and 198 at IIM Rohtak. That's the reason a disciplined, structured prep plan is more important than cramming at the last minute.
How to Prepare for IPMAT 2027
1. Start with fundamentals, not shortcuts. Questions are tests of concept, not speed, so learn the material in classes 8-10, and then work on the higher-level sets.
2. Don't only practice full mocks, but section-wise. Because time is not interchangeable between sections, practice answering the questions in each section within a 40-minute time limit.
3. Read daily. Readers develop a vocabulary and an increase in their comprehension speed, which are the areas Verbal Ability tests for, with newspapers, editorials, and fiction.
4. Regularly take full length mocks. During a simulation, you will learn to regulate pacing and nerves, even with the "no time borrowed" rule from section to section on the exam day.
5. Track sectional cutoffs, not just your total score. Make sure that all three cutoffs are completed at the same time and don't let one poor section bring down an otherwise good shot.
Practice short answer questions on your own, as there is no multiple-choice option there, and require a different problem-solving strategy than regular MCQs.
Students who get a year or even two ahead of the game with 30-45 minutes a day of preparation tend to have much better base skills than students who do a last minute crash course after the boards.
Final Thoughts
The opportunity at IPMAT 2027 is truly special, as it provides a direct route into IIM following Class 12, eliminating the need for a separate undergraduate program and a subsequent CAT exam. The time frame between now and the actual test in May 2027 is the right length to be making steady, well-structured study habits, rather than panicking and cramming closer to exam day. Monitor the official notification pages for the exact dates, begin early on fundamentals, and consider each section as a mini-exam. If you are disciplined enough and prepare well, you can easily make it to this dual degree program at IIM Indore or IIM Rohtak.
