What is the IPMAT Full Form?

Simply put, IPMAT stands for the Integrated Programme in Management Aptitude Test. It is a national-level test conducted by IIM Indore and Rohtak for entry to the prestigious 5-year Integrated Programme in Management (IPM) which is a dual degree course consisting of a Bachelor's degree and an MBA. Unlike other management entrance exams which demand the candidates to have a bachelor's degree before applying to the exam, IPMAT is designed for class 12th pass-outs. This allows students to bypass the conventional pathway of graduating from school first and then taking part in CAT later — instead, they walk straight into an IIM campus at 18 and come out 5 years later with a full-fledged MBA along with their school degree.

Understanding IPM: The Programme Behind the Exam

The Integrated Programme in Management (IPM) essentially is a combination of two programmes – BBA and MBA, which is a five-year single voyage. The first three years build the foundation — you learn subjects such as economics, statistics, communication and the humanities as well as the core management ideas. A social internship is generally undertaken at this time. The last two years are like a full-time MBA course with specializations, live projects and placement assistance. Upon the completion of the program, students get two degrees along with a conceptual foundation of five years in business management.

Which Exams Fall Under the IPMAT Umbrella?

Note that the term "IPMAT" does not refer to a single, standardized test administered by a single organization. There are a couple variations:

 • IPMAT Indore – Conducted by IIM Indore, this is the most well-known and widely accepted version. Additionally, several private business schools and IIM Ranchi, Amritsar and Shillong use scores.

 • IPMAT Rohtak – A separate test conducted independently by IIM Rohtak for its own IPM cohort.

 • JIPMAT – Conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of IIM Jammu and IIM Bodh Gaya, this is a distinct national-level exam with its own pattern.

A number of aspirants opt for taking more than one of these, as there is a significant overlap in the syllabus of each, and having an additional option enhances the likelihood of securing a seat.

IPMAT Exam Pattern

The exam pattern is slightly different across each IIM, but roughly speaking, there are three skill areas that are tested for in the IPMAT – Quantitative Ability, Verbal Ability, and for some exams, Logical Reasoning.

The following are usually included in the test for the IIM Indore version:

Section

Question Type

Number of Questions

Duration

Quantitative Ability (MCQ)

Multiple Choice

30

40 minutes

Quantitative Ability (Short Answer)

Numerical Answer

15

40 minutes

Verbal Ability (MCQ)

Multiple Choice

45

40 minutes

For each MCQ, the correct answer receives +4 marks and every incorrect answer receives -1 mark. However, the negative marking scheme for the short answer questions is different as they are usually not penalised for incorrect answers. The exam pattern at IIM Rohtak is slightly different with the inclusion of a Logical Reasoning section in addition to Quant and Verbal, and with no short answer section.

IPMAT Eligibility Criteria

Before you start prepping, make sure you actually qualify. The eligibility criteria may vary from institute to institute, but here is a general outline:
 • Candidates must have passed or be appearing for Class 12 (or equivalent) from a recognized board.
 • A minimum aggregate of around 60% marks in both Class 10 and Class 12 is generally required for General/OBC candidates, with a relaxed 55% for SC/ST/PwD candidates.
 • There is usually an upper age limit — for example, candidates must be born on or after a certain date with relaxations for reserved categories.
 • Some IIMs, particularly IIM Indore, prefer or require Mathematics as a subject in Class 12.
It is always better to cross check the updated notification from the official IIM website as there can be a little change in the eligibility criteria from year to year.

 IPMAT Syllabus at a Glance

The good news? There is no need to master anything too advanced. The syllabus is heavily based on the concepts of class 9th to class 12th, but with a focus of application and speed.

1. Quantitative Ability- generally includes number systems, percentage, profit and loss, ratio, average, simple interest and compound interest, time speed distance, basic algebra, geometry, mensuration, and data interpretation.

 2. Verbal Ability- Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary (Synonyms/Antonyms), Grammar, Sentence Correction, Para Jumbles, and Fill in Blanks.

 3. Logical Reasoning- (if there is any in the Exam) deals with arrangement, series, puzzles, and pattern-based questions.

Selection Process: It's Not Just About the Written Test

Clearing the written exam is just step one. Most IIMs conduct multiple stage selection process:

 1. Written Test (IPMAT) – Based on the aptitude of the following sections.

 2. Written Ability Test (WAT) – Candidates are asked to write a short essay on a given topic, testing structure, clarity, and command over language.

 3. Personal Interview (PI) – A meeting (or video conference) with an interview panel to evaluate communication skills, general awareness, and management aptitude.

Your IPMAT score, WAT performance, PI score and academic record are generally used to determine your selection, with each having its own weightage.

Opting for IPMAT immediately after the completion of school is not merely saving years, but it really changes the course of your career. You get:

 • Five years of in-depth study of business, economics, and leadership.
