The five sections are each marked out of 20, and the total mark is 400. This is a computer-based test (CBT) of 3 hours duration, without any time limit for each section, allowing the candidate to move between sections at their own speed within the overall time limit.

Marking scheme: Each correct answer will be awarded 4 marks, and each wrong answer will be deducted 1 mark (negative marking). Unattempted questions will not be marked if they are attempted or not. If a question is lost as a result of a technical fault, every candidate receives 100% of the marks for that question even if they had not attempted it.

The analysis of recent exams reveals that a score between 300 and 320 usually falls in the 99.5 percentile, whereas a score of 270 to 285 is usually in the 99 percentiles—these are important things to consider when looking at your PYQ practice scores.

How to Use CMAT PYQs Effectively
 

 Simply downloading a stack of PDFs won't move your percentile — how you use them matters far more. Here's a practical approach:
 1. Simulate real exam conditions: Try the full paper at one go as you would do on exam day, with a time limit of three hours.
 2. Review thoroughly after each attempt: After every attempt, review all questions you missed or skipped, and not only the right answer, but the reasoning behind it.
 3. Track section-wise performance over multiple papers: Are you consistently slow in Quantitative Techniques? Finding that you are having problems with current affairs in General Awareness? These patterns become apparent over time in previous papers.
 4. Pay attention to the reoccurring question types: If the seating arrangements or blood relation puzzles appear frequently in the Logical Reasoning sections of previous years, ensure that you are aware of those formats in particular.
 5. Do not just focus on PYQs: Past years papers are very useful but would be better to use full length mock tests, sectional tests, and concept revision.
