GMAT PYQs: GMAT Question Papers Based on Latest Syllabus & Pattern

If you're preparing for GMAT, you might have heard it a million times: "Solve as many GMAT PYQs as you can. The reason is, PYQs help the students walk through a typical GMAT exam - giving real examination experience and showing the actual pattern of the question paper but the problem is GMAT paper papers are not officially available from the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC). Unlike CAT or XAT or CMAT, the GMAT is a computer adaptive test (CAT) and each test taker is presented with a different set of questions (algorithmically). There is no specific "paper" to be released from a previous year.

However, you don't need to prepare based on official PYQs. GMAT sample papers designed by experts on actual questions from the GMAT retired set and pattern of the latest Focus Edition provide you with the closest possible experience to the actual GMAT exam. Read on to download them and know exactly what to do while preparing for the GMAT 2026.

GMAT Exam Pattern and Scoring (Focus Edition)

It is important to know the exam pattern in and out before starting solving sample papers. The GMAT Focus Edition was introduced in 2024 after the older GMAT format was replaced, and the test was shortened with the removal of the Analytical Writing Assessment, Sentence Correction and the heavy-duty Geometry quotient Integrated Reasoning.

The GMAT Focus Edition consists of three sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, Data Insights, for a total of 64 questions, completed in 2 hours 15 minutes. Every section is 45 minutes long and is worth the same number of points. The biggest benefit of the new format is that candidates have the option to sit the three sections of the exam in any sequence and there's a 10 minute break between any 2 sections.

Unlike the SAT, the GMAT does not have negative marking, although an incomplete section will have a harder time improving your overall score than a few wrong answers will.

Why Solve GMAT Sample Papers (Best Alternative to PYQs):

GMAT PYQs in the traditional sense don't exist, and sample papers created from retired GMAT questions and official practice patterns are your next best bet (and in fact, they do the job just as well, if not better, since they're updated to reflect the current Focus Edition syllabus). Regularly solving them does this for your prep:

• Acquires knowledge of the adaptive question flow and difficulty jumps.
• Improves time management in Quant, Verbal, and Data Insights.
• Identifies weak areas early on and corrects them before the test day.
• Helps lower the stress that comes with taking an exam.
• Increases accuracy with formal and repetitive practice.

A good starting point is GMAC's official practice material, which is the GMAT Official Starter Kit on mba.com; it currently contains 70 official GMAT practice questions and two full-length practice tests at no cost. In addition, a mix of official questions and well-crafted unofficial sample papers provides a practice pool that closely resembles the actual trend of the past year's tests.

How to Use GMAT Sample Papers Effectively

Downloading a stack of PDFs doesn't automatically advance your score — how you use them does. First, establish your basic concepts in Quant and Verbal, and then work on a complete paper. When you have mastered the basics, tackle one sample paper at a time and time yourself just as you will on test days. As you take every test, check each error thoroughly and keep an error log — this one thing can make the difference between students who get stuck and those who improve their scores over time. As you get more comfortable, raise the level of your practice tests and make sure you do it in 45 minutes per section, without any distractions or pauses in the middle of the section.

Mistakes to avoid while solving GMAT sample papers

• Skipping timed conditions – Don't treat sample papers casually. Test as if it were a real test: no pausing, no interruptions, and strict timer.
• Review process is skipped – Doing an attempt is not enough. Follow that up with going through each question — right and wrong — to see why an answer was right or wrong. Here you will find the real learning.
• Trying full-length tests too soon – If you're trying full-length tests before you have mastered your Quant and Verbal basics, you risk losing your confidence needlessly early on in your preparation.
• Failure to use the error log – If you do not keep a log of errors (by topic or by error type) then you are likely to repeat the same errors over several papers.
• Focusing on the score rather than the pattern: If you're only concerned with the score rather than the pattern of your errors (e.g., always making errors on Data Sufficiency) then you're only going to get better in a narrow range of ways.
• Failure to keep track of time per section – If you are failing to keep track of how long you take per section, this will become a bad time management habit that you will take into the actual test.

FAQs

What are GMAT PYQs?

PYQs is referred to as Previous Year Question Papers. The GMAT is a computer-adaptive test, however, with each test taker being given a different set of questions, algorithmically determined by the test, GMAC has never published past year papers. What you can find are official retired questions, practice papers and sample papers designed by experts which will simulate the actual exam environment.

Why doesn't GMAC release GMAT previous year papers?

The GMAT adopts a computer-adaptive test approach; that is, the test questions adjust in difficulty and order throughout the test depending on student responses. No two test takers get the same paper to take, so there is no one "yearly paper" to publish. Unlike exams such as CAT, XAT or SNAP which have released static papers traditionally and later moved to computer-based exams, this is a new exam format for CAT.

Are GMAT sample papers as effective as PYQs?

Yes. The well-designed GMAT sample papers, particularly those constructed from retired questions from the latest GMAT Focus Edition pattern are very similar to what you find in the actual GMAT exam in terms of level of difficulty, types of questions, and timing. Together with GMAC Official Mock Tests, they are the best alternative of the previous year papers.

How many GMAT sample papers should I solve before the exam?

There is no fixed number, but most successful test takers take at least 8-10 full length sample papers or mock tests during the preparation period along with regular section-wise practice. It is more important to look at all the errors and monitor progress over time rather than the quantity of errors.
