MICAT 2026: Exam Dates, Pattern, Syllabus, and Preparation

If you are looking for a career in advertising, marketing or strategic communication, chances are that you have heard about MICA Ahmedabad already. To enter its doors, you must pass the MICA Admissions Test. The exam is scheduled to be conducted in two parts. The part will be held in December 2026 while the second part will be held in February 2027. To  help you understand the exam pattern, syllabus, eligibility, preparation, and exam dates we have put together all the details in the content below. So, let’s get started.

What Is MICAT 2026?

MICAT is a national level entrance test organised by Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad (MICA) for admission to PGDM and PGDM-C (Post Graduate Diploma in Management — Communications) programs. As opposed to an MBA entrance exam which puts a lot of emphasis on quant and logic, MICAT also looks at a candidate's behavioural and psychological aspects prior to the aptitude test, making it a rather unique exam in the Indian B-school landscape.

The trick that leads many novice applicants astray is the fact that MICAT relies on other components. In addition, candidates must have a valid score from one of the exams conducted by AICTE — CAT, XAT or GMAT — from the previous year, and the highest score will be taken into account for MICA. Candidates who pass both rounds advance to the Group Exercise (GE) and then to the Personal Interview (PI) round.

MICAT 2027 Exam Dates: Upcoming Schedule

One of the greatest things about MICAT is you have more than one chance at it. The exam is conducted by MICA in several stages in every admission cycle and the highest score is considered for short-listing. If you are aiming at the 2027–29 batch, this is the upcoming MICAT 2027 schedule according to the pattern followed by the MICA from year to year:

MICAT Phase 1 Registration: The first phase of the registration process for MICAT is expected to be open from September 2026 and closed by late November 2026.

• MICAT Phase 2 Registration: Likely to open in late November 2026 and close in late January 2027.

Who's Eligible for MICAT 2026?

There is great ease in the eligibility criteria for MICAT when compared to other entrance exams. MICA's post-graduate courses (PGDM-C and PGDM) require a completed bachelor's degree (10+2+3). The undergraduate percentage does not have to be a strict cutoff across the sources; you can apply for provisional admission while completing your final year of undergraduate studies if you have a specific provision admission clause in MICA's official notification.

MICAT 2026 Exam Pattern: Breaking Down the Sections

This is where MICAT really sets itself apart. The test is divided into three parts, testing three aspects of your personality and skillset.

Section A — Psychometric Test- This section has around 150 questions and is purely qualifying in nature. It's basically a personality test to evaluate problem solving skills, and examinees have to pass this test for the remaining sections to be judged. Usually consists of questions asking for arguments, which are rated on the basis of how close they are to your personality, and situational questions, which are rated on a scale of 1 to 6. No negative marking here and, importantly, marks earned in this section do not contribute to your merit score – it is a gate keeper, not a scorer.

Section B — Descriptive Test — A very short part of the paper, usually four questions, testing your ability to express yourself in writing and to think creatively. There is no negative marking as in Section A, however, this section does contribute towards your final MICAT score, unlike Section A.

Section C – Aptitude Test – This is the most similar section to a typical MBA entrance test and is divided into four sub-sections:
• Verbal Ability
• General Awareness
• Divergent and Convergent Thinking (Reasoning)
• Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation

There are 70 questions in section C, each worth 1 mark, and 0.25 mark will be deducted for each wrong answer.

Overall, the entire test is divided into approximately 220-235 questions and requires approximately 135 minutes to complete, but the number of questions has fluctuated by cycle, so please refer to your admit card and official notification for the exact number of questions. Negative marking of 0.25 is used only in sub-sections of Section C. Use the descriptive section to express yourself, not play safe, as both sections A and B are free of penalty for incorrect answers.

How Your Final Score Is Calculated

MICAT is not a stand-alone gatekeeper, but is part of a composite formula. Both your CAT/XAT/GMAT score and your MICAT score are taken into account and then a scaled composite score is found. Selection is made for the next round, Group Exercise and Personal Interview. Some of the detailed breakdowns indicate that you can expect around about 30% from MICAT, 20% from your CAT/XAT/GMAT, 20% from your Group Exercise and 30% from your Personal Interview — however, the weightage can change from year to year and do not rely on this as a rule of thumb.
Seats are scarce too – only about 180 seats are filled through counseling, making each step of the process very competitive.

How to Prepare for MICAT 2026

As MICAT combines personality assessment with conventional aptitude testing, your preparation approach has to go a little beyond that of a conventional CAT or XAT preparation program:
• For Section A (Psychometric): There is no right or wrong answer; the true preparation is self-awareness. Be consistent in your argument and situational response ratings; sometimes it is flagged if one rating for one question is different from another rating in similar questions.
• For Section B (Descriptive): Practice writing short, structured answers to current affairs, marketing trends, and creative questions. It does help to read extensively (either newspaper or ad campaigns, or brand case studies).
• For Section C (Aptitude): Standard CAT or CMAT preparation material is good enough here because the topics are common to other MBA entrance exams. Special focus on General Awareness (media, advertising and marketing), as MICA DNA is communication.
• Take mock tests regularly. Official mock tests are usually provided by MICA nearer to the exam and so are the previous year's question papers which are readily available, which is good to get used to the pressure of the 135 minute exam across 3 very different sections.
• Don't neglect current affairs. As MICA is a communication and media school, the questions in General Awareness tend to be more inclined towards advertising, branding and the developments that are happening in the media industry than towards general knowledge.

Final Thoughts

MICAT 2026 is not just a part of your MBA entrance exam checklist — it is a uniquely different exam that rewards self-awareness, clear writing and general aptitude in equal measure. The multi-phase structure is working to your advantage as you have multiple attempts and MICA records the highest score. The secret is to approach each part individually: do the psychometric test as yourself, do the descriptive test in a clear and concise manner, and do the aptitude test like you're going to do it in the exam. Please continue following the site for any changes in dates, fees, and pattern as these are subject to change from one admission cycle to the next.
If the MICA course itself and a career in strategic communication are really exciting, then take the exam with great care: this means doing it early, practicing it regularly and entering results day with much less anxiety than you began with.
